Since before kindergarten, I have been enamored with words. In fourth grade—my first introduction to proofreading symbols—I had found my new favorite thing! And I would go on to practice this favorite thing in ways that would irritate my friends in middle school (these lovely, tolerant people are still my friends today, so at least I was tactful about it—and good at maintaining long-term relationships).

As Father Time remains undefeated, so does my love for editing, which I’ve been doing professionally for over ten years. While I still enjoy talking about grammatical rules and the difference between “rules” and “style” with anyone willing to listen to the pedantry, I gave up being a prescriptivist years ago.

I have deep knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style (my personal favorite) as well as APA style, can find my way around the AP Stylebook just fine, remember the basics of MLA, and can appreciate all style guides because they each serve a different purpose. The most important style guides are the author and audience, and I strive to tell writers’ stories (or brands, blogs, emails, etc.) in ways that are invisible to them while being clear to the reader. The final say, of course, is always yours—the author and creator!

Most of my experience is in higher education, covering everything from student curriculum to legal/compliance documentation and technical/UX writing for our proprietary CMS. I have also edited a few fiction and nonfiction manuscripts on a contract basis. My favorite projects are long-form articles and technical/UX editing (and writing); I have a knack for the latter, as well as a keen eye for universal design. I hold an MS in general psychology from Grand Canyon University and a BS in psychology from the University of Central Florida with a minor in literature.
